It's been a while.

I have a new computer! Every day, I keep thinking about how I should be blogging...and then I dont. BUT...now I have a new computer, so that changes everything. I want to be on this thing all the time. It's so nice to type on and play around with [that's what she said]! Anyways, so it's been a while though since my last blog. Not a whole lot has happened since then. I've had two midterms, with another two coming up next week. Yay. I've played some good volleyball...and some bad volleyball. Oh--and today I decided (after looking at my class/exam schedule) that I will participate in the keg races over Memorial day weekend. That weekend, on Saturday, we will be attending Spirit Mountain's "Raindrops" (a club...yea. seriously). When I say we, I mean myself and some pharmacy student friends...as if I have any others. Then the following day is the day of the keg races.
Other news, we've been starting class elections and such. Well, we've really been starting OSSP elections, and will be having speeches from those running for OSSP chair positions Friday. I'm excited that some of my classmates have the opportunity to get involved like I have been this past year. I'm really glad I was able to be a part of student government this year, actually. I had forgotten how nice it is to be busy and involved in school. Anyways, I will be running for the EC event coordinator position--a non-voting position in EC, but it should be very fun.
Lab was interesting today. We talked about skin problems, like psoriasis, dry skin, poison oak/ivy, and skin hypersensitivity. Here are some things from lab this week, as well as a couple pictures from lab last week, when we talked about wounds, burns, etc.

Oh Saturday

Tonight the Blazers lost...not only did they lose...they got blown out. At home. A bunch of us pharm students got together and had a pot luck tonight and watched the game. It was a pretty enjoyable night overall. Now I'm wasting time on the computer so I dont have to study my vitamins. Woo. Hmmm...maybe I should go out with all those people...I'm seriously considering it since I'm home alone and have no reason to come home or be home right now. I just dont want to deal with a hangover tomorrow. I have to show the apartment to someone tomorrow at 1ish in the afternoon, and I should study...I haven't been productive at all today. Getting drunk tonight might actually make sense now that I'm thinking about it. It would be the perfect end to a nonproductive day. Ugh. I cant let me talk myself into drinking...because in order for me to actually enjoy myself anywhere in town (corvallis) I'd have to be totally trashed...ok. I'm not going to do it. I've worked too hard lately going to the gym and all...Yeah. I shouldnt. Ok. I wont. Maybe. Ugh.

Ohhh...the decisions a college student must make...Those people with real jobs can get trashed on Fridays and Saturdays without the consequences... haha

Monday Monday

I went to my rotation today at the Albany Medicap. I was there for 5 hours, but it went by really fast. I honestly had a great time. One of my classmates and I were able to help out a lady go through her mom's medications. It was actually really rewarding, and the woman was very appreciative.
I also mailed out my Washington intern license today. Yay me! Now I just have to fill out my Albertsons application and get pee-tested. Not so yay me.
Anyways, I need to cut this short, because I'm hungry--going to hit up the late night happy hour at McMenamin's with Craig:) Yay for cheap burgers/fries and delicious beer late at night!

I'm so working out tomorrow morning:)

Easter Sunday

Today is Easter Sunday. Not really a big day for me personally, but the town of Corvallis has cleared out for the weekend. Yesterday I was able to go visit my parents and have dinner with them. We had okonomiyaki--delicious! Craig made olive bread too. I was excited to visit the cats and the dog while we were there. We left late and ended up just driving back down to Corvallis that night. On our way out of town, Craig got pulled over for driving too slow...hahaha. Hilarious. Today...nothing. I definitely did catch up on sleep though, which was much needed and appreciated. I am thinking about dying my hair tonight...maybe get some studying done.
I really want to just read a book.
Oh--here's something interesting. Apparently (according to Facebook) my sister and her boyfriend got another dog. They already have a shih tzu, which they got only a few months ago. Ok. First of all, yes. I'm jealous. Second, seriously...two dogs? Dogs live 10+ years...it's a huge commitment to make--especially jointly with a boyfriend of only a few months. Might as well have a kid.

Etsy is dangerous.

So Craig and I had a nice night last night--we watched The Devil's Rejects. Pretty disturbing movie--I loved it. If you're looking for a horror film, and aren't scared by the gory stuff, I would definitely recommend this movie to you. It's got so many disturbing elements, it's scary (pun intended).
Anyways, today I got on etsy to look for a late birthday present I could send to my sister. First I looked at the necklaces, then I started looking at the rings and purses. First, I have no clue what my sister likes. I'm going to bet it's nothing like what I like. Second, I just spent over two hours browsing etsy. Kill me. But seriously though...what an awesome site. Every time I get on there, I want to learn how to make jewelry and learn how to sew. Some people are just too talented for their own good. I still haven't found anything for my sister yet...maybe I'll just get something for myself and call it good.
This weekend is Easter weekend. Yay. I'm not sure why I even mention it, seeing as I'm not religious, and will spend the majority of the time "studying". And by "studying", I mean studying. And by studying, I mean browsing Etsy for hours on end, not actually buying anything because I can't make a decision on what to get, or come up with an excuse to spend money on jewelry I can't wear for more than a couple hours (hypersensitivity to metals).
Meh. Maybe I'll just have a beer.

Then again, I have been doing a great job (in my opinion, which is the only one that counts) on going to the gym more regularly. It gives me great pleasure to listen to aweful music and sweat bullets all while monitoring the "calories burned" count on the stairmaster. Those counters are somewhat hilarious, but I still get a kick out of burning hundreds of calories in such a short amount of time. 3500 Calories to lose per pound? Oh yeah. I can do that. Along with my "not eating til the point of pain" goal, I'll be a friggen twig in no time! HA.

The First

And so begins my blog...maybe this will be easier than keeping a diary. HA. Doubtful...at least a diary is pseudo-portable. Being that my laptop is basically only functioning as a desktop, a good old fashioned spiral might better suit my needs...it IS lightweight and takes up a minimal amount of space.
Anyways, it's a Wednesday. I should be at Block 15 enjoying a delicious beer right now and playing shuffleboard...alas, the night is young. There will be time for that later, so long as I don't fall asleep at 9:30 pm...again. I just cant seem to get good sleep these days. Wait--I lie. I slept wonderfully Monday night.
Spring term is in full swing now. I should be thinking about projects, studying, tests, etc. Yet, my mind is consumed with books, good cooking, and this summer. YES. Senioritis...and I've got another three years ahead of me. Wonderful. I guess it happens to everyone. Maybe I'll go to the beach this weekend. Ugh. Not very helpful. It's so rare to get a nice sunny day in Oregon, though.

Just last week, I went to a little taqueria in Portland with a friend for happy hour. I had a delicious sangria and ceviche. I actually enjoyed the ceviche so much that I had to find a recipe to try...which I did last night. Here is an approximation of how I made it. The recipe seems somewhat customizable; just make sure there's enough of the acid to "cook" the shrimp, fish, octopus, or whatever you use.

Shrimp Ceviche
  • Lemon juice from 3 large lemons
  • Lime juice (the store's limes looked aweful, so I just bought the juice and mixed it with the lemon)
  • 1 Pound Shrimp, cut into pieces
  • 2 Jalepenos diced (I removed the seeds/insides to keep it from getting too spicy)
  • 1 Large white onion diced
  • 4-5 Tomatos diced
  • 1 Bunch of cilantro, minced
  • ~1TBSP Worcestershire sauce
  • ~1TBSP Ketchup
  • Sliced avocado
  • Salt/Pepper to taste
Devein/remove the shells from the shrimp, and soak them in the lime/lemon juice for about 5 minutes, until they are opaque. Then you can add all of the remaining ingredients, except for the worcestershire, ketchup, avocado, salt, and pepper. You can probably add these, but I didn't. Mix everything thoroughly, and put it in the fridge overnight. You might be ok with only putting it in the fridge for an hour, but I'm a little leary of uncooked seafood. Plus, leaving it overnight allows the flavors to really meld. When you're ready to eat this, add the worcestershire, ketchup, avocado, salt, and pepper. I eyeballed these amounts--it would be pretty hard to ruin this dish by adding too much of any of these ingredients.
Serve on a toasted corn tortilla, or with chips. You can also put this in a martini glass with chips along side. This is really easy to make, but keep in mind that it takes a lot of time to chop everything up.

Anyways, I really liked the ceviche. I'll definitely make it again!
